August PADI IDC Gili Islands in Indonesia

The PADI IDC Gili Islands is over. The IDC Candidates passed their PADI Instructor Examination and followed their dream to become a PADI Instructor. Now the real life as a dive instructor starts for Davy and Michelle. A new adventure, a long time dream, the oceans as their office....

Ending up after a 2 hours boat ride from Bali at Gili Air, it is not far to see Oceans 5. At the Pier there is a huge banner "Learn to dive at Oceans 5", at the beach PADI flags are dangling through the wind, and the dive center is only 5 meters away from the fast boat arrival point.

This is the first impression of most of our IDC candidates if they came from another island. The roads are sandy, there are no cars and no motorbikes, only hors carts and bikes. It is the perfect place for a PADI IDC.

The dive shop is a modern dive shop, the entrance is a 100 years old building from Java, called a Joglo, and the joglo is surrounded by relaxing spots. Behind the Joglo is a 25 meter training pool, an equipment room for students, an equipment room for guests, divemasters, and instructors. And a few meters further a huge classroom with AC, coffee corner and relaxing spaces.

The dive shop is in a resort, Oceans 5, that has 12 bungalows. Everything is build in a relaxing manner, so a lot of space to set up equipment and to teach.

This relaxing atmosphere is one of the key points of the PADI IDC Gili Islands philosophy. Oceans 5 has 2 PADI Course Directors, ! master Instructor, and 4 PADI IDC Staff Instructors who helps the candidates during the PADI IDC. The duration of the IDC is 12 days and the days starts at 8.30 and will be finished at 17.00. So no long working nights at Oceans 5 as an IDC candidate, that time is for relaxing and enjoying the beautiful sunsets at Gili Air.

After the 12 day PADI IDC there is a 2 days PADI Instructor Examination at Gili Trawangan. This was a piece of cake for our 2 candidates. Michelle and Davy passed the IE with very high scores and after the IE they could call themselves "PADI Instructors".

Understanding Reverse Diving Profiles

Reverse Diving Profiles In the world of scuba diving, safety is paramount. Every diver is trained to follow certain protocols and guidelines to minimize risks and ensure enjoyable experiences beneath the waves. One such guideline that has sparked debate and discussion over the years is the concept of reverse diving profiles. Reverse Diving Profiles Reevaluating Traditional Wisdom Traditionally, divers have been advised to start their dives deep and gradually ascend, a practice known as a forward profile. This approach is based on the principles of decompression theory and aims to reduce the likelihood of decompression sickness (DCS) by allowing the body to off-gas nitrogen slowly as the diver ascends. Insights from Research and Workshops However, with the advent of dive computers and advancements in dive research, the once strict adherence to forward profiles has come under scrutiny. Contrary to the expectations of many, data has emerged showing that divers engaging in reverse profiles

What a year for PADI IDC Gili Islands in Indonesia

What a year for PADI IDC Gili Islands! Being part of a growing business on the Gili Islands brings me a lot of joy and fulfillment. Each year we see a growth in the amount of happy new dive instructors. Being a PADI Course Director has its challenges. Next to evaluating, explaining different ways to organize courses, transferring knowledge and making candidates understand the importance of standards there is a big psychological aspect that can be quite draining. As a Course Director you are affected by the disappointments and the success of all the candidates, making it an emotional ride from beginning to end. Everyone, who has all the necessary prerequisites, can become a dive instructor. There is no discrimination in this field. This means that we get IDC candidates from all over the world, with different backgrounds and of different age groups. Because of this variety, a harmonious group dynamic is often the hardest part to achieve. It’s also because of this variety that
