In just a few weeks, a new chapter begins for a group of passionate divers ready to take the leap into professional dive instruction. On the 2nd of July, PADI Course Director Waz will welcome the next group of candidates to the PADI Instructor Development Course (IDC) at Oceans 5 Gili Air, a dive center that has redefined what it means to train the next generation of dive professionals.

If you’ve ever dreamed of turning your passion for diving into a lifelong career, this is your chance to make it happen—with the support of one of the most respected and well-equipped IDC facilities in Indonesia.

IDC Training That Isn’t Treated Like a Side Product

Unlike many dive shops where instructor training is squeezed in between fun dives and beginner courses, Oceans 5 Gili Air has created a dedicated IDC department—not as an afterthought, but as one of the core pillars of the dive center.

Here, the IDC program is treated with the respect it deserves. It's given its own schedule, classroom space, pool sessions, and team of instructors who focus solely on transforming divemasters into confident, competent, and environmentally aware dive instructors. This separation of departments allows the IDC to run without distractions, with the full attention of the Course Directors and instructional staff.

Built for Instructor Training from the Start

When Oceans 5 Gili Air opened its doors in 2010, it wasn’t just another dive shop. From day one, the founder had a clear vision: to become the first PADI Career Development Centre on Gili Air. And that vision was realized in 2014 when Oceans 5 officially received the highest rating in the PADI system for instructor training.

Instead of retrofitting a dive center to meet IDC standards, Oceans 5 was built for it from the ground up. Two 25-meter training pools were constructed—offering the ideal environment for confined water presentations. A spacious, air-conditioned classroom was designed specifically to host IDC candidates. Even the boats used for training dives are tailored to the needs of instructor-level candidates, allowing for easy access, equipment management, and briefing space.

Course Director Waz: Passionate, Supportive, and Realistic

At the heart of every great IDC is a great Course Director—and Waz brings his years of experience, enthusiasm, and no-nonsense training style to every course he runs. With a background not only in recreational diving but also in technical diving and emergency response, Waz has a wealth of knowledge that he passes on in a calm and accessible way.

Rather than teaching to simply pass the PADI Instructor Examination, Waz focuses on building real-world skills that candidates will use every day as instructors—from handling student anxiety and guiding Discover Scuba Divers to making neutral buoyancy second nature. His goal is to make sure every IDC graduate feels ready to teach the day after they pass their IE.

A Dive Centre That Lives Its Philosophy

Since 2011, Oceans 5 Gili Air has followed a strong and clear philosophy: quality over quantity, always. This isn’t just a tagline—it’s a way of operating that touches every department, from fun diving to conservation and tech.

For the IDC, this means:

  • Small groups—a maximum of six IDC candidates per course

  • Personal attention to each candidate’s strengths and weaknesses

  • Realistic training with neutral buoyancy skill development

  • Support beyond the IE, including a free 2–3 week IDC internship to build teaching confidence

Most importantly, the Course Directors don’t just teach standards—they live them. The IDC team follows PADI protocols strictly and models the professionalism they expect from future instructors.

Part of a Larger Professional Family

At Oceans 5 Gili Air, the IDC department isn’t the only professional training department. It works side-by-side with the Conservation Department, which runs marine ecology workshops, reef surveys, and coral restoration activities in partnership with the University of Mataram. It also collaborates with the Technical Diving Department, where divers can progress into TDI courses such as Advanced Nitrox and Decompression Procedures.

This cross-department collaboration gives IDC candidates a unique opportunity: they don’t just graduate as instructors—they graduate with insight into conservation and tech diving, better prepared to find their niche in the dive industry.

The Next Step in Your Dive Career Starts July 2nd

If you’re ready to start your life as a dive professional, there’s no better place to begin than at Oceans 5 Gili Air.
