Frogfishes are always a highlight, and at the moment they can be spotted on several dive sites around the Gili Islands. Their unusual shapes, camouflage patterns, and quirky movements make them some of the most sought-after subjects for divers with cameras. Current hotspots include Hans Reef, Mentiggi Bay, and the Bounty Wreck, where divers have been rewarded with close encounters of different sizes and colors. Whether you’re a seasoned photographer or just beginning, frogfish are always a joy to discover.

For those in search of the more elegant and mysterious critters, the Gili Islands are also home to a variety of pipefishes and ornate ghostpipefishes. Hans Reef and Mentiggi Bay are delivering consistent sightings of ornate ghostpipefish—delicate, colorful, and often camouflaged within feather stars or soft corals. Their unusual appearance and graceful movements make them one of the most photogenic creatures of the macro world.

The Magic of Mandarinfish

If you’re looking for color, the harbor of Gili Air is the place to be. Here you’ll find mandarinfish—tiny, dazzling fish that display some of the most vivid colors in the ocean. Their blue, orange, and green patterns make them a favorite among underwater photographers. At sunset, mandarinfish are particularly active, making dusk dives an unforgettable experience.

Wonderpus and Mimic Octopus Encounters

Macro diving around the Gili Islands isn’t complete without mentioning the chance of encountering some of the ocean’s most bizarre and intelligent creatures: the wonderpus and mimic octopus. Both are known for their extraordinary camouflage and unique behaviors. The best place to spot them at the moment is Mentiggi Bay, a dive site that continues to surprise divers with new sightings.

Diving With Oceans 5 Gili Air

At Oceans 5 Gili Air, we make macro diving accessible and enjoyable for divers of all levels. Our schedule includes three dives per day with the option of a night dive, giving divers every opportunity to encounter the incredible variety of marine life the Gili Islands have to offer.

After every dive, we return to our dive center, where divers can relax and review their photos. With six experienced divemasters on the team, we ensure small groups with a maximum of four customers per divemaster. This approach allows for personal attention, longer bottom times, and more chances to find and photograph the tiny critters hiding in the reefs.

Quality Over Quantity

Some divers may think Oceans 5 is a huge operation, but in reality, we are spacious, not crowded. Our philosophy is clear: we care about quality, not quantity. Every dive is carefully planned, and every diver is treated as part of our extended family. Just as importantly, we care about our environment. Conservation is part of our daily routine, and our staff works hard to protect the fragile ecosystems of the Gili Islands.

Why Now Is the Time

You don’t need to travel to Indonesia’s most famous muck diving destinations like Lembeh or Ambon to see world-class macro life. Right now, the Gili Islands are delivering an exceptional macro diving season. Whether it’s frogfish at Hans Reef, ornate ghostpipefish at Mentiggi Bay, mandarinfish at the Gili Air harbor, or the possibility of spotting wonderpus and mimic octopus, the variety is endless.
